Kilt Night Swagger with Heathen Highlanders

Piper Down Irish Pub presents Kilt Night Swagger with Heathen Highlanders and the Crawford School of Irish Dancing February 12th, 2011 at 9pm. 2/12/2011

Heathen Highlanders with Crawford Irish Dancers, Bagpipes, Irish Music, Celtic Dancing, Highland Dancing, Piper Down Pub, Salt Lake City, UtahIt all started one late October night in 2005; Mike, Ian and Dave met together on the Piper Down stage to show the crowd what they had. They struck in, and the bar went wild. From that moment on, the idea that was to become the Heathen Highlanders was born. Time passed, and the group has grown to be eleven members strong. They perform at bar shows, conventions, weddings, funerals, bar mitzvahs, and any other events imaginable. No job is too odd.

This rag tag bunch of miscreants are dedicated to blaring loud Scottish and Irish bagpipe music, emptying barrels of punch, wooing lonely women and having a lot of fun. They are easily recognized by their lack of uniformity and complete disregard for the rules of traditional piping. If you happen to run into one of these guys around Salt Lake City, don’t worry; everyone but Steve has received their rabies shots. Just drop a dollar in the jug and enjoy.

The Crawford School of Irish Dance can trace its roots back to 1983 when it began in Utah as the McTeggart School of Irish Dance, under the direction of Maureen McTeggart Hall A.D.C.R.G.  It is the oldest Irish dance school in the state of Utah and has been under the direction of Jill Polkinghorne Crawford, TCRG since 2002.

BYU Cougarettes in Concert

BYU Cougarettes, Brigham Young University, Dance Team, Cheerleaders, Provo, Utah, LDS, Mormons, Covey Arts Center

The Cougarettes of Brigham Young University have long been associated with the pageantry and tradition of BYU intercollegiate athletics. First established in 1946, the Cougarettes boast an alumni of thousands, who have helped to make the Cougarettes what they are today. In the year 2000, they joined forces with the cheer squad, promoting spirit and dancing during home games.

The Cougarettes are categorized as a precision dance team, but in fact the scope and breadth of their focus is deeper and much more varied. The Cougarettes are fluid in jazz, funk, lyrical, character, high kick, and military. Dancers are required to have knowledge and practical abilities in ballet, modern, and jazz technique. They must also maintain their growth and progression in each of these areas while they are members of the Cougarette performing team.

The Cougarettes are the 2010 National Collegiate Dance Team Champions. They were also awarded the title of Grand Champions, with the highest score overall. They also won the award for Best Choreography. They have been named as one of the top 25 Collegiate Dance Teams in the Nation in “Dance Spirit” magazine. The Cougarettes were National Collegiate Dance Team Champions in 2007, 2006, 2005, 2001, 1999, 1998, 1997, after winning the NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Team Championships. Eight titles as well as three top four finishes have made the Cougarettes truly a team to watch. They are credited with raising the level of competitive collegiate dance teams to a new and respected level. They were also USA (United Spirit Association) National Champions in 2005 and 2006.

The Cougarettes are recognized as having a high level of technical excellence and advanced level of difficulty from the dancers and within the choreography that they present. Becoming a member of the Cougarette dance team is very competitive as anywhere from 100 to 150 hopeful applicants audition each year. Interested dancers come from across the country to audition for a spot on the team of 16 dancers. The Cougarettes must be in peak physical form and possess a wholesome appearance with an incredible sense of stage presence. Energy, excitement, and professionalism are all synonymous with the BYU Cougarettes. Former and present Cougarettes have held the title of Miss Drill and Dance Team USA and royalty and many have gone on to teach highly successful and competitive dance teams of their own. Former Cougarettes have also been hired as performers for Walt Disney Co. (National and International), Universal Studios, Opryland, various cruise lines, Broadway and touring productions, Professional Dance Companies, as well as National Basketball Association (NBA) dancers. The Cougarettes were performers at various live sites and venues throughout the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.

The mission of the Cougarettes is to provide the very best high quality halftimes and dance performances all while maintaining the standards, spiritual focus, and atmosphere of Brigham Young University and the LDS Church.

The Secret Garden Ballet

Secret Garden Ballet, Peery's Egyptian Theatre, Theater, Ogden, Utah, Weber County, Dance PerformancesThe Secret Garden, an original ballet choreographed by Raymond Van Mason premiered in 2005, when it received rave reviews from dance critics and the audiences.

The ballet is based on the story by Frances Hodgson Burnett with the original musical score written by well-known composer Kurt Bestor. The ballet was conceived over twelve years ago by Mason and Bestor when they worked together on the ballet Seasons for Ballet West.

As Mason and Bestor collaborated on the work, they expressed how they wanted to bring the story of Mary Lenox, a bad-tempered, disagreeable child, who is sent to England to live with her uncle in a big, lonely, old house, after her parents die in India. She arrives a sour-faced, sickly little madam with a furious temper, but through her friendship with local Yorkshire lad, Dickon, and their discovery of a secret garden, soon becomes a happy and healthy girl. She shares her newfound love of life with her…

…then they work their magic on the garden, and in turn the garden works its magic on the children and everyone around them. Enchanting and illuminating, The Secret Garden is a richly imaginative story about the potential for transformation.
