Draper Historic Theater

The Draper Historic Theatre has strong cultural and historical significance to the community. In 1938, Annie Pearl and John A. Howell family built a movie house named “The Pearl.” Vaudeville performances would start off the evening, followed by a movie or two. Many locals felt fortunate to have a first-run theatre right in their small town.

For many generations, this building, now on the Draper Historic Register, served as a gathering place for the south end of the valley. In 1988, the theater was purchased by Charles and Vanessa Nelson, who added theatrical lighting, and sound and expanded the stage, enabling the presentation of live shows. With humble beginnings, DHT grew into what could be called “the best-kept secret in the valley.” Ten years later, DHT became a non-profit organization, and in 2004 the Board of Directors purchased the building from the Nelsons through a major fundraising effort. Having the organization purchase the building allows for the theater to truly belong to the Draper community.

A tad light on the square footage, but this music scene certainly isn’t lacking. The stage is set at the front of a large garage, with adequate floor space and a few risers in the back. A small courtyard outside provides extra standing room when the inside exceeds maximum capacity. The building isn’t state-of-the-art, but the sound system and lighting is quite good.

A Christmas Carol

A Christmas Carol, Hale Theatre, Orem, Utah

Often lauded as the “second greatest Christmas story ever told,” Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol will usher you into the season of giving. This traditional story of Scrooge and his ghostly visitors is filled with old-world charm, beautiful costumes, breathtaking music, and, of course, a full helping of Hale’s heart and comedy.

No Christmas Season is complete without the din of family dinners, glorious games, magical mistletoe, caroling carolers, firkins of wassail, and Dickens’ timeless characters that embody Christmas cheer: Bob Cratchit, Mr. Scrooge, three Christmas ghosts, and of course, Tiny Tim. Whether you have seen it once, fifty times, or more, Hale Center Theater Orem invites you to be their guest for an evening as you escape all the noise, commercialism, and greed that have invaded this time of year so you can remember what the season is all about.
