Plein Air Festival

Thanksgiving Point, a scenic cultural gathering place, will offer its 55-acre garden and other property venues as a canvas to more than 30 local artists in its annual Plein Air Festival, Sept. 8-10. Painters and sculptors will spread out across the 300-acre space to create works of art in the open air where spectators can watch, interact and learn from their talent.

“Our Gardens have proved to be an inspiring venue for the local talent and we are pleased once again to offer the Gardens as well as our other inspiring venues Farm Country, the Museum of Ancient Life and Water Tower Plaza as subject matter for the artists,” said Blake Wigdahl, director of programming at Thanksgiving Point. “Plein air is an exercise in fine art for the artists as well as the spectators.”

Rockapella

Rockapella reached its first milestone as a featured performer on the PBS television special Do It A Cappella, hosted by acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee. Created to showcase the supreme capability and virtuosity of the human voice, the program was a perfect platform for Rockapella’s talent and infectious energy to be noticed.

When their appearance on Do It A Cappella hit the airwaves, the doo-wop stereotype of vocal group pop music was crushed and crushed so hard that PBS eagerly came calling again. They quickly requested Rockapella not only write and record the theme music for their soon-to-be-hit show Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? but asked that the group star in the show as the house band. The daily Rockapellafest of Carmen brought ten million viewers every week for the next five years, and to this very day, at every concert the group performs, the crowd screams to hear the theme song they remember from the show. It’s music for the entire family!

Ya-Ya Sisterhood Party

Hosted by B98.7’s radio host Erin, the annual Ya-Ya Sisterhood party will feature palm readers, decorative hats, one-of-a-kind holiday items, tastings from Harvest Restaurant, and fabulous local vendors. Attendees are encouraged to don their most over-the-top finery and baubles. The fancy dresses, gaudy jewelry and feather boas should also be accompanied by extravagant headdresses – and no headdress is too grand or outrageous.

A GUIDE TO ATTENDING YOUR FIRST YA-YA SISTERHOOD PARTY

Put on the Ritz
Ruffles, bows, fancy dresses, and feather boas….nothing is too “over-the-top” for the Ya-Ya Sisterhood Party. Have a grand cocktail ring but no fancy parties to wear it to? Get a few more to keep it company and wear it. Frippery, regalia, finery, and baubles are all part of the evening’s magic.

Wear a Headdress
Wearing your own special headdress is the crowning touch, a way to transform the everyday you into an extraordinary Ya-Ya Sister. Making the headdress to express your true, beautiful inner self is all part of the fun. You don’t have to be artistic or even “crafty” to create the most stupendous, outrageous, and unique headdress in the world. Obtain a “base hat” from your closet, the attic, or a vintage shop. Use supplies at hand or visit a craft store.

Princesses and Her Majesties
It’s true that we can’t choose our own name at birth, but we can name ourselves as a member of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. Come to the Ya-Ya Sisterhood Party with your new name and join us to be officially named in your Very Special Naming Ceremony. The goal is to honor each other, welcome your new name, and celebrate the glorious uniqueness of each one of you.

A Mysterious Occurrence Dinner Date

On Friday, March 11, and Saturday, March 12, at 6 p.m., BYU’s Museum of Peoples and Cultures (MPC) will host a dinner for couples who come to help solve a mystery.

Help Solve A Mystery, Dinner Date Night, Museum of People and Cultures, BYU, Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah County, LDSEach semester, the MPC hosts a Mystery Dinner date night where play out character personalities and work to discover who stole a valuable artifact from the Museum. Identity profiles are assigned to each individual when they purchase tickets and include a brief history of their character along with costume suggestions.

“It’s really fun to see what participants do with their character,” said Anna McKean, promotions manager at the Museum. “Each session is different because of the people that come—the variety makes it a lot of fun.”

“The Disappearance of the Parrot Jar” will begin with a tour of the exhibit “crime scene” where the artifact was stolen. The mystery unfolds over dinner, as clues are revealed and accusations made. Each character is a suspect in the mystery and everyone must prove their innocence to the other participants.

Tickets for the date night are $24 per couple (which includes dinner and dessert*) and will be available at the WSC Information Desk beginning March 7. For more information visit mpc.byu.edu or call 801.422.0020. (*Unfortunately the MPC cannot accommodate gluten or dairy allergies.)
