Luke Bulla (Lyle Lovett), Sean Watkins (Nickel Creek) and Glen Phillips

WPA is an expandable collective, with Luke Bulla (Lyle Lovett), Sean Watkins (Nickel Creek) and Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket) at its core.

Works Progress Administration takes its name from FDR’s 1939 New Deal initiative, which put millions to work making buildings, bridges, theater, art and music. The original WPA was rooted in the values of community and creativity, and helped to keep the fire of human dignity burning through the darkest years of the Great Imposters.

WPA was born out of the musical community surrounding the legendary LA club, Largo. The members of the band had known and admired each other for years, and found themselves with a strong batch of unrecorded songs, a little down time, and a collective feeling that it might be a good idea to put something on tape.

An album of country music entitled Learn to Live followed in 2008 on Capitol Records Nashville. With these singles, Rucker has become the first black artist to top the country charts since Charley Pride did in 1983; “Alright” also made him the first country singer since Wynonna Judd to have their first three singles all reach Number One.

Dave Matthews

“Summer means two things in America: It’s hot, and the Dave Matthews Band are on tour,” said Rolling Stone. “Their set delivered the goods at Rothbury, and few would argue they didn’t make the festival their own,” said The Detroit News of Dave Matthews Band’s headlining performance at last summer’s first-ever Rothbury festival. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette praised the group’s show there as “nothing short of inspired and inspiring” while The Oklahoman said: “this is a band that stretches out and thrives in the open air and under the stars.” “Mr. Matthews’ trade is to stir up a melange of approaches – from rock and folksy pop to bluegrass and smooth jazz – to make doubt positive, make loss a gain’ and make depression a celebration,” observed The Dallas Morning News.

Dethklok and Mastodon

Dethklok is both a fictional death metal band featured in the Adult Swim animated program Metalocalypse, created by Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha, and a virtual band created to perform the band’s music in live shows. The band is sometimes cited as an example of “comedy rock” on par with bands such as GWAR and Spinal Tap. The first Dethklok album was released on September 25, 2007, entitled The Dethalbum. The music heard on Metalocalypse is performed by Brendon Small, with others as needed. Small and drummer Gene Hoglan performed on the album. The album debuted at #21 on the Billboard Top 200 list.
