Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series

The fourth annual visit to Miller Motorsports Park by the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16 brings a major change. The race distance has been shortened from 1000 kilometers to a two-hour-45 minute sprint race, which will bring an entirely new set of strategies into play. Teams will have to race hard from beginning to end, and work in “sprint” mode rather than “endurance” mode. As exciting as the longer races were, this year’s event should be a nail-biter from start to finish!

The Tempest

In this Young Company one-hour adaptation for families, audiences are invited to enjoy Shakespeare’s last, and some say, greatest play. After a magician-King and his daughter are banished to an island inhabited by fairies, they are provided a chance to return home. Before they do, however, they must negotiate between forgiveness and revenge, magic and power, betrayal and love. We welcome you to this production that shows us that we are all “such stuff as dreams are made on.”

Irish Fiddle Virtuoso, Martin Hayes

Returning to Ogden to open the 2009-20 Cultural Affairs season are Irish fiddle virtuoso, Martin Hayes, and American guitarist, Dennis Cahill. The duo has garnered international renown for taking traditional Irish music to the very edge of the genre, holding listeners spellbound with slow-building, fiery performances.

Martin Hayes is regarded as one of the most extraordinary talents to emerge in the world of Irish traditional music. His unique sound, his mastery of his chosen instrument – the violin – his acknowledgement of the past and his shaping of the future of the music, combine to create an astonishing and formidable artistic intelligence. He is the recipient of major national and international awards: most recently the prestigious Gradam Ceoil, Musician of the Year 2008 from the Irish language television station TG 4; previously Man of the Year from the American Irish Historical Society; Folk Instrumentalist of the Year from BBC Radio; a National Entertainment Award (the Irish ‘Grammy’); six All-Ireland fiddle championships – before the age of nineteen – and cited by the Irish Sunday Tribune as one of the hundred most influential Irish men and women in the fields of entertainment, politics and sports in the year 2000, as well as one of the most important musicians to come out of Ireland in the last fifty years.

Plein Air Festival

Thanksgiving Point, a scenic cultural gathering place, will offer its 55-acre garden and other property venues as a canvas to more than 30 local artists in its annual Plein Air Festival, Sept. 8-10. Painters and sculptors will spread out across the 300-acre space to create works of art in the open air where spectators can watch, interact and learn from their talent.

“Our Gardens have proved to be an inspiring venue for the local talent and we are pleased once again to offer the Gardens as well as our other inspiring venues Farm Country, the Museum of Ancient Life and Water Tower Plaza as subject matter for the artists,” said Blake Wigdahl, director of programming at Thanksgiving Point. “Plein air is an exercise in fine art for the artists as well as the spectators.”
