Cotton Jones with Oh My God and Paul Jacobsen and the Madison Arm
Cumberland, Maryland-based band, The Cotton Jones Basket Ride is an indie folk-pop band currently signed to Suicide Squeeze Records. The band started as a side project for Michael Nau, lead singer and creator of Page France, and has since become a full-time project, releasing a series of EPs and embarking on its first large scale tour.
Biology says: That people who live at high altitudes must develop physiological adaptations to the decreased amount of oxygen available in order to maintain homeostasis. The list of adaptations includes a heart that is proportionally larger thanthat of a person living at sealevel. Michael Nau and Whitney McGraw have hearts huge, hearts full of music that mixes elements of soul, rock and gospel into a gauzy cocoon of small town sound.
The Portland, OR, folk duo Horse Feathers consist of singer/songwriter Justin Ringle (acoustic guitar, vocals, percussion) and multi-instrumentalist Peter Broderick (violin, banjo, mandolin, cello, viola, piano, saw, percussion, vocals). Ringle grew up in Idaho and played in several short-lived indie rock bands during his teenage years, but moved to Portland in 2004, where he met Broderick, who was already a member of the more established Portland band Norfolk & Western. They spent much of 2005 writing songs and honing their live performances at various Portland open-mike nights. Influenced by both the stark folk music of Bruce Springsteen’sNebraska and the post-classical work of Scandinavian composer Max Richter, the duo entered the studio in February 2006 to record its debut album, Words Are Dead, 11 chamber-folk tracks featuring Ringle’s high, reedy vocals and enigmatic lyrics and Broderick’s baroque filigree. Words Are Dead was released on Lucky Madison Records in September 2006. The band inked a deal with the Kill Rock Stars label the following year, releasing House with No Home in 2008. – All Music Guide
The music of Cotton Jones speaks of transition: the passage from one form, state of mind, style or place to another. Songs become doorways to the past or windows that open on some unnamed future, where innocence can still exist and perfection is thrown to the wind.
The Glowstream is a place centered between North and South Cumberland. It’s not really called the Glowstream – just a stream that rolls to a dead end by the train tracks downtown. A place to sit, undisturbed in the cool shade, and see the interstate bend around glowing steeples, as cars and trucks break their speed – it’s beautiful – how the city materializes, an oasis, after driving many miles through the mountains along I-68 – to this spot, where it’s possible to witness all the paces change.
“Tall Hours in the Glowstream,'” is the title of their new album. Some of the songs that made the final cut were tracked in northern States, while the majority were recorded and mixed in Winterville, Georgia, as a revolving cast of players, thinkers, and singers were invited to hang in the band’s living-room studio. The resulting sounds are both rich and charmingly lo-fi, full of vivid imagery and more gorgeous vocal harmony. Hard-asking tracks like “Somehow To Keep It Going” and “More Songs For Margaret” prove the promise in this music, the feeling of something better to come if only you can hold tight a little longer…”Always the mornings keep coming…” And what a beautiful thing that is…

Melody and Tyler had quite a background in music even before getting together. Tyler was the drummer in a once popular local band called Blind Iris, which was based out of Logan and seemed very close to a break through career. They competed and placed in several competitions, and after their debut self-titled album, they were honored with a song placement on the Tony Hawk Underground game. Tyler has been in several bands as well, including Eggs Blackstone, and a brief stint in Exploding Hybrid. Since his drumming days, Tyler has taken up playing the acoustic guitar and singing with Melody. .
Melody has been playing guitar since high school where she did several talent shows, and contests. She began writing music at age 13 and worked her way from piano to guitar at age 16. With a sound similar to Sarah McLaughlin (a huge influence) she played solo for several years all over Cache Valley, UT (surprisingly, all at the same time as Tyler and the two never meeting). Melody moved throughout the North West for a few years before eventually moving back to Utah in 2007, she had decided it was time to get serious with her music.
Tyler’s band decided to part ways only months before and the timing was perfect. They met at an open mic, and it wasn’t long before they started performing together. In October 2007, they moved from Logan to Salt Lake City, and by January 2009 they were performing on a regular basis, often every weekend. While performing at various venues and seeing the wide range of talent around them, they realized that it was time to do something different to help the music scene.
They founded the Acoustic All-Stars Festival in Park City (Now working on the 3rd year). Due to its quick success, they were honored with a feature and cover story in InThisWeek magazine, a feature in the Park Record Newspaper, and several influential friendships.
Melody and Tyler Forsberg have been fortunate in their careers being included in such festivals as Earth Jam, Park Silly, and Sugarhouse arts Festival, Performing at The Star Bar during Sundance, and the Utah State Fair, and Recently had the honor to open for J.R. Richards of Dishwalla for a benefit concert for Hannah Laursen, an 8 year old girl with cancer.
They will be beginning recording for their first Duo album in February 2010 and have sold over 300 copies of Melody’s album “Finally” in the past year without any store placement, mainly from show sales. They are consistently booked through at least 2 months of shows, rarely taking time off, and making sure to play at least 2 shows a weekend, trying to keep at least 18 shows on the roster at all times. Most recently, they played 100 shows in 2009 not including open mics and interviews and were the winners of the Best Local Acoustic Band POSTY award for 2009.
This year Melody and Tyler are planning a tour through Los Angeles with Nicole “Kole” Christensen around the ASCAP music expo in April and are performing at the Utica Arts and Music Festival in New York in September.
Singer/Song writter Misty River awakened to her musical calling in 2008. After having a near death exsperence. Misty has set her intendtion on sharing the essence of love and peace that she experienced on the other side with the world. Her music is not just music. It’s a message. And her lyric’s are not just words. They’re a sermon to music. That touches the soul of the listener with a deep feeling of global awareness and an intense desire to bring about change. Misty is known for her angelic voice and a stage presence that has brought many to tears. She is open, honest and real about the change she wants to make on this planet. And is never wavering in her ablity to describe that change in a way that will shake your soul.
The first time I heard Brinton play was at Humpy’s [Anchorage, AK]…and I was blown away. He took the stage, played a couple chords, sang two notes, and completely silenced the crowd. He took charge of the room and by the end of his first song I seriously had butterflies. He is a killer lyricist, and also writes those melodies that get stuck in your head for days and days.
Anyone who has heard the music of Brinton Jones will agree that his songs are literature of the heart. Like a book bound by melody, harmony, and honesty, they unfold before you. Paragraphs become verses and chapters become choruses, leaving room for interpretation & relation. Brinton is an author as much as he is a songwriter. After you’ve heard his music and shut the book, you feel close to something that, before, felt so far away. You long to hear it again. Square Magazine
