Harmed – Art Gallery Exhibit

Harmed, a body work by artist Stephanie Wilde (Boise, ID) is about the corporate greed of the few and its devastating effects on the many. She began this series of intimately detailed ink, acrylic and gold leaf works as a response to idle gossip in her backyard: a local corporate CEO misused his power in the mid 1990’s and the scandal made national headlines. Perplexed, Wilde wondered how this individual lost his moral compass. Considering the corporate downfall of companies since Wilde began this body of work, this is a question many of us find ourselves asking of today’s corporate leaders. Depicting the debauchery and excess of those in power as they control and manipulate circumstanced and others, Harmed is about loss: moral, financial and perhaps most disheartening, loss of faith in the corporate world.

SHAOLIN: Temple of Zen

Over the past eight years, photographer Justin Guariglia has slowly but surely won the trust of the notoriously secretive warrior monks of the Shaolin Temple, a unique Chinese Buddhist sect dedicated to preserving a form of kung fu referred to as the “vehicle of Zen.” With the blessing of the main abbot, Shi Yong Xin, Guariglia has earned the full collaboration of the monks to create an astonishing, empathetic record of the Shaolin art forms and the individuals who consider themselves the keepers of these traditions. It is the first time the monks have allowed such extensive documentation of these masters and their centuries-old art forms – from Buddhist mudras to classical kung fu – in their original setting, a 1,500-year-old Buddhist temple.

Legacy Parkway Bike and Run

Please join us at the Hess Cancer Legacy Bike and Run, held on August 29, 2009. It includes a Half-Marathon, a 20-Mile Bike Tour, and a 2-Mile Fun Run. These three events will be held on the Legacy Parkway, which will be the first time the Parkway has been closed since opening last year. Registration is now open for this event!

The Hess Cancer Foundation, Inc (HCF) is a Utah-based public charity. HCF is all about helping those who need it most and keeping the donations they receive in the local community.

Many public charities have been organized to find a cure for cancer, but that isn’t our goal. We are instead focusing on providing financial assistance to those families that have been struck by cancer and weren’t financially prepared for it.

If you are a father or a mother, then you know how much your child means to you. When your child is diagnosed with cancer, everything changes — your life will change. If cancer steals your child from you, then your wish will be to tell the world what a perfect child you had. HCF only wants to help those parents that have faced such a tragedy do exactly that.

The Pirates of Penzance

The Off Broadway Theatre, celebrating 15 years of comedy, is pleased to announce the opening of The Pirates of Penzance, the famous light-parody and satire, by Gilbert and Sullivan on Friday July 31st. Curtain rises at 7:30 PM. Seating is reserved.

Originally written and premiered in 1879, The Pirates of Penzance is the story of a young lad, Frederic, who, on his twenty-first birthday, newly out of his pirate apprenticeship, soon finds out that though he has technically lived twenty-one years, he was born on leap year and is thus torn between his “sense of duty” to finish his indentures with the haggard lot of pirates (finishing at the age of 63) or to live a new life on the shores of Cornwall, England with the fair-maiden Mabel.

Frederic is played by new-comer, David Peterson. Mabel is played by Rivkah Steele, an Idaho resident, who also is debuting her talent at Off Broadway Theatre. Both David and Rivkah will be available for interviews; please call to schedule.

Joe Firstman in Park City

Joe Firstman is a classic American songwriter. He has a defined sound yet doesn’t stick to any formula as his songs range from intimate piano/acoustic ballads to dynamic blues rockers to sophisticated pop songs. His lyrics go way beyond his years as he writes of everyday emotions and experiences with a fresh, unique and powerful delivery. His voice perfectly matches the message and tone of each individual song.

The Lovell Sisters

There is a word often used when describing rising Americana stars The Lovell Sisters: Passion. It’s what these three young women (ages 18-23) feel when they step on stage. Passion is the fuel that feeds their writing and arranging, and it colors every note they play and sing on Time To Grow, their upcoming album. Winners of Prairie Home Companion’s National Teen Talent Competition in 2005, the Lovell Sisters spread the heavenly harmony of sisterhood and sibling string virtuosity — Jessica on fiddle, Megan on dobro, Rebecca on guitar and mandolin (the first female to win the Merlefest mandolin contest).”
