Blonde Redhead

Blonde Redhead’s noisy, dissonant guitars, alternate tunings, and quiet, stilted lyrics have often been compared to early Sonic Youth. After randomly meeting at an Italian restaurant in New York, Japanese art students Kazu Makino and Maki Takahashi and Italian twin brothers Simone and Amedeo Pace formed the band in 1993. The name was taken from a song by the ’80s no wave band DNA. __by Tracy Frey

KARMA featuring KASKADE

KI Events & The Kollective present KARMA featuring KASKADE. Le Castle Vania & DJK open.

Karma is a SAMA award-winning (South African equivalent of the Grammy) singer-songwriter and the former lead singer of South Africa’s platinum selling band Henry Ate. She moved to the United States in 2003, bringing with her an undeniable talent, addictive songs and an uncanny ability to captivate every listener with mesmerizing performances.

Karma’s sound is reminiscent of Suzanne Vega and Natalie Merchant infused with the pop friendliness of The Cranberries, while her writing channels the likes of Dylan, Griffin and Mitchell offering an infusion of social satire, quick wit, heartfelt melancholy and in-your-face honesty – attributes which have earned her the title of 1 Wordsmith in her native South Africa and landed her a publishing deal with Urband & Lazar Music Publishing here in the US.

Karma Musical ArtistKarma has toured extensively over the past five years performing alongside The Gin Blossoms, Fiction Plane, G Love and Special Sauce and Iron & Wine to name a few. In 2008 Karma has performed over 160 shows, including: Karma’s landmark performance in The London Eye (Feb), her sold out Henry Ate Kick in the Shin Tour (Apr-May), her celebrated performance at London Pride to 45,000 people (Jul), two national US tours (Feb-Mar & Jun-Aug), headlining the Women’s Red Rock Festival (Aug) and her highly acclaimed performance at the star studded Phelophepa 7th Gala Dinner at the New York Times Center (Nov).

With two solo albums under her belt, “Don’t Walk Fly” engineered by Grammy Award-winner Scott Canto (Shakira, Jon Secada, Nine Inch Nails, Ricky Martin) and “papercuts” co-produced by Grammy Award-winner John D Thomas (Lauryn Hill, P.Diddy, Prince, Missy Elliot, Jamie Foxx) plus the hit single “I Feel Like I’m Dying” with Lil’ Wayne for which Karma’s song “Once” was sampled and is at the center of what has been called a landmark case in a copyright law in the US, Karma is well on her way to showing the rest of the world what South Africa already knows: Here is an amazingly prolific young songwriter who is teetering on the brink of worldwide recognition.

Sara Bareilles

A gifted singer and a versatile pianist with no formal training, Sara Bareilles burst onto the pop scene with a naturally skilled voice that ranged from powerful and soulful to sweet and gentle, earning her instant comparisons to Fiona Apple and Norah Jones. At age 18, she left the Redwood forests of her hometown, Eureka, CA, in pursuit of the big city lights of Los Angeles. Although she attended UCLA’s Communication Studies program, Bareilles spent the majority of her spare time studying her new environment and writing poetry and songs about the busy surroundings.

Sara Bareilles, Singer-Songwriter, Musical ArtistAfter graduating, she spent the next three years performing those songs at open-mic nights, slowly building her confidence as a musician before playing local venues and festivals. In 2003, she co-produced her first demo, Careful Confessions, and became enthralled with recording techniques. Eager to go back to the studio and create a second full-length album, she started shopping her CD around and signed a deal with Epic Records in April 2005. Producer Eric Rosse took her under his wing the following February and the two spent a little over a year perfecting the orchestration — nearly half of the songs had formerly appeared on Careful Confessions and a new batch of tracks was carefully constructed in order to make her first major-label release as strong as possible. The lyrical themes of the album, entitled Little Voice and released in July 2007, covered her past relationships, insecurities, and inner battles with trying to trust her instincts. The single “Love Song,” after being promoted by both iTunes and Rhapsody, made the album a hit; both single and album reached the Top Ten. – All Music Guide

Brad Paisley

Brad Paisley Country Music ArtistWith the release of his eighth album, American Saturday Night, Brad proves once again that he remains a master of his craft – or, more accurately, his crafts. To date, the album has launched three #1 singles with “Then,” “Welcome to the Future,” and the title track, which became the 16th #1 of his career – and his 12th consecutive chart-topper – making him second only to the great Sonny James as the solo country artist with the most consecutive #1 singles in chart history. “Then” became the fastest rising single of his career, spending three weeks at #1 and becoming a couples favorite, with fans adopting the ballad of love growing better over time as an “our song” unlike anything Brad has ever recorded. Indeed, his singing has never been more nuanced than in “Then,” or in “No,” an observation of life and prayer penned with “Whiskey Lullaby” writers Jon Randall and Country Music Hall-of-Famer Bill Anderson.

As much as Brad is the guy next door, a funny, fishing, easygoing sort, his prodigious talent, likeable personality, and strong work ethic have conspired to make him one of the genre’s brightest lights. He is known for bridging the gap between young audiences and country’s roots, uniting generations with the sheer joyful exuberance of his music, stage presence, and videos. With American Saturday Night, he offers what he says is “a record about our times. This is a record about my life and the times I’m living in and the times that my children are living in, and the love and loss and heartbreak and triumphs and everything in between.”

USA SPOTLIGHT REVIEW
…Paisley’s true strength is his ability to marvel at everyday things — pop culture (American Saturday Night), technology (Welcome to the Future), fatherhood (Anything Like Me) or the many uses of water (Water) — and to make others share his fascination. Throw in a handful of extraordinary guitar licks, and there’s a lot worth marveling over.
— Brian Mansfield

WASHINGTON POST Review
Paisley is no one-hat wonder. As versatile an artist as Nashville has produced in years, the honey-drawling singer is equally adept at humorous, twangy rave-ups (“Catch All the Fish”) and honky-tonk putdowns (“The Pants”) as he is with sentimental storytelling (“No,” “Anything Like Me”). But nowhere does he sound better — or sadder — than on classic country weepers. “Oh Yeah, You’re Gone” could be about a lover who has simply left, or one who passed away
