Calo Flamenco Dance Performance

Flamenco DanceImagine Ballet Theater (IBT), an Ogden-based ballet company in residence at Peery’s Egyptian Theater, is proud to present an evening of traditional Spanish dance with Calo Flamenco: Ballet de Martin Gaxiola.

Calo Flamenco not only shows audiences the powerful and passionate dance form, but also the many vibrant and charged aspects that go hand in hand with the dancing: the music, singing, and costumes that accompany the dancers on stage create a vivid scene of Spanish culture and life.

Artistic director, Martin Gaxiola, created Calo Flamenco in 2003, and the group has toured extensively throughout the United States with great success, including such dance hubs as New York City. With over 15 talented dancers and musicians, Calo Flamenco stands as one of the largest professional flamenco companies in the nation.

Irish Fiddle Virtuoso, Martin Hayes

Returning to Ogden to open the 2009-20 Cultural Affairs season are Irish fiddle virtuoso, Martin Hayes, and American guitarist, Dennis Cahill. The duo has garnered international renown for taking traditional Irish music to the very edge of the genre, holding listeners spellbound with slow-building, fiery performances.

Martin Hayes is regarded as one of the most extraordinary talents to emerge in the world of Irish traditional music. His unique sound, his mastery of his chosen instrument – the violin – his acknowledgement of the past and his shaping of the future of the music, combine to create an astonishing and formidable artistic intelligence. He is the recipient of major national and international awards: most recently the prestigious Gradam Ceoil, Musician of the Year 2008 from the Irish language television station TG 4; previously Man of the Year from the American Irish Historical Society; Folk Instrumentalist of the Year from BBC Radio; a National Entertainment Award (the Irish ‘Grammy’); six All-Ireland fiddle championships – before the age of nineteen – and cited by the Irish Sunday Tribune as one of the hundred most influential Irish men and women in the fields of entertainment, politics and sports in the year 2000, as well as one of the most important musicians to come out of Ireland in the last fifty years.

The Lovell Sisters

There is a word often used when describing rising Americana stars The Lovell Sisters: Passion. It’s what these three young women (ages 18-23) feel when they step on stage. Passion is the fuel that feeds their writing and arranging, and it colors every note they play and sing on Time To Grow, their upcoming album. Winners of Prairie Home Companion’s National Teen Talent Competition in 2005, the Lovell Sisters spread the heavenly harmony of sisterhood and sibling string virtuosity — Jessica on fiddle, Megan on dobro, Rebecca on guitar and mandolin (the first female to win the Merlefest mandolin contest).”

Portland Cello Project

Self-Described “Indie Cello Orchestra,” The Portland Cello Project (or, PCP, as their fans affectionately call them) has a deep-rooted philosophy of building a stronger music community through collaborations across all genres. Their performances are unique and eclectic—one might hear hip-hop mixed with bach or a haunting cover of Britney Spears. This is a whole new cello experience.
