FIBT Bobsled and Skeleton World Championships

Utah Olympic Park presents the World Junior Championship Bobsleigh, Skeleton at Park City’s Olympic Park January 31st – February 6th, 2011

Bobsledding, FIBT Bobsled and Skeleton Championships, Federation Internationale de Bobsleigh, Park City, Utah, Olympic Park, Winter ActivitiesBoth men and women compete in the sport of bobsleigh, a sport that combines speed, power and agility. There are two person races for men and women. Men also have a four-man event. Bobsleigh is one of the original sports in the Olympic Winter Games.

In skeleton, there are separate racing disciplines for men and women. In World Cup competitions two heats are held over one day.  At the FIBT World Championships (held annually except in the Olympic year), four heats are held over two days.

The Federation Internationale de Bobsleigh et de Tobogganing (FIBT) was founded on November 23, 1923 by the delegates of Great Britain, France and Switzerland, and the representatives of Canada and the United States, meeting at an International Congress in Paris, France. The FIBT headquarters is in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Bobsleigh as an organized and active sport thrived from before the turn of the century. However, it was the advent of the 1924 Winter Games and the acceptance of Bobsleigh as an Olympic sport that prompted the formation of a federation.

HALFPIPE

Halfpipe is the most noted of snowboarding disciplines with a long track record of U.S. Olympic success. Halfpipe events are conducted in a giant pipe built at resorts with manmade snow and carved with specialized equipment to create up to a 22-foot deep pipe. Halfpipe riders perform a series of jumps, tricks and maneuvers that are judged for their degree of difficulty and execution. In typical competitions, riders in the finals of an event take two runs with their best run scored.

Halfpipe has been an Olympic event since snowboarding’s debut in 1998. The USA won two medals in 1998, four in 2002 including a sweep of men’s and gold in women’s, and four in 2006.

SNOWBOARDCROSS

Snowboardcross, or SBX, debuted in the 2006 Olympics to rave reviews as one of the most action packed events in snowboarding. Riders race against each other in groups of four on a specially built snowboardcross course that includes banked turns, jumps, rollers and varied terrain.

The USA has had great success in snowboardcross, with Seth Wescott winning the first Olympic gold and Lindsey Jacobellis taking silver in Torino.

SLOPESTYLE

Slopestyle tests a rider’s ability to handle a variety of terrain by executing freestyle maneuvers down a course filled with terrain features including rails, hips, tabletops and a multitude of jumps, allowing riders to combine big air and technical tricks into one run. Riders are judged on amplitude, execution, difficulty of line, landings and use of the course.

Slopestyle is not yet an Olympic event, but is rapidly gaining in popularity.

ALPINE

Alpine snowboarding was one of the original Olympic events in 1998. In World Cup competitions, there are several formats including parallel giant slalom and parallel slalom. The Olympics features only parallel giant slalom.

In parallel giant slalom, or PGS, riders race head to head on side-by-side giant slalom courses with the winner advancing to the next round. Parallel slalom, or PSL, is similar but with athletes competing on slalom courses.

Winter Dew Tour Toyota Championships, Ogden, Utah, Snowbasin Resort, Huntsville, Snowboarding, Snow SkiingWith the success of Snowbasin’s first year hosting the Dew Tour we have added better snow-making and additional mountain terrain features. Combined with our superior dining and top rated customer service, snow enthusiasts are sure to appreciate the experience that Snowbasin has to offer. With all this being said, Snowbasin is still one of Utah’s best-kept secrets that only gets better year after year!

New 22- Foot Pipe and Terrain Parks

Snowbasin has once again stepped up its Park and Pipe features for the new season by introducing an Olympic-sized 22-foot Superpipe, which will not only meet today’s trick standards for the Dew Tour but will also set Snowbasin apart as the leader in terrain park features for all resorts to rival. Snowbasin is also expanding the amount of Terrain Parks to four, ranging from a new beginners area on Upper Snowshoe to the Dew Tour Park on Showboat. Snowbasin has added 21 new rails this season giving the entire mountain over 60 rail features placed throughout each Terrain Park. You can view all these new mountain features live on national television when the Winter Dew Tour is presented on NBC February 10-13, 2011. The Dew Tour terrain park will remain open the rest of the season, giving guests the chance to show off their skills on a world-class level!

Making its debut in December 2008, the Dew Tour is the first ever winter action sports tour. Made up of three events over the course of as many months, all three stops feature snowboard superpipe & slopestyle, as well as freeski slopestyle & superpipe.

The Tour crowns champions in each of the six disciplines (Men SNB Superpipe, Women SNB Superpipe, Men SNB Slopestyle, Women SNB Slopestyle, Freeski Superpipe, Freeski Slopestyle), giving away $2.5 million over the course of the year and awarding the Dew Cup at season’s end based on a cumulative points system.

At each Winter Dew Tour event, there is also a live concert featuring top artists and a huge Festival Village with video gaming, giveaways, tons of new products to try out, athlete autograph signings… and the list goes on and on.

More than 380 of the top winter action sports athletes in the world will return for the third season of the Winter Dew Tour to compete for the highly coveted Dew Cup. Last year’s 2009/10 Dew Cup champions include JJ Thomas (men’s snowboard superpipe), Kaitlyn Farrington (women’s snowboard superpipe), Sage Kotsenburg (men’s snowboard slopestyle), Jamie Anderson (women’s snowboard slopestyle), Jossi Wells (freeski superpipe) and Andreas Hatveit (freeski slopestyle).
